Is Shrek on Disney+?
Disney+ is one of the fastest-rising streaming services today because of how popular the Disney brand has always been when it comes to entertainment. And after acquiring a lot of different studios like Marvel and even the Star Wars franchise, Disney has become even more prominent in the entertainment business.
With that, Disney was able to launch Disney+, which streams content that is all original and all owned by Disney. That means that Disney+ doesn’t show anything that the company doesn’t own. It doesn’t even show movies and shows that Disney merely has the right to air because Disney+ only shows content that Disney owns.
So, does that mean that Shrek isn’t on Disney+? Yes, Shrek isn’t on Disney+ precisely because Disney doesn’t own Shrek. The Shrek franchise is owned by DreamWorks Animation, which isn’t a part of Disney but is owned by the umbrella company called Comcast Corporation.
Because of the very fact that Shrek is owned by an entirely different company, it cannot be shown on Disney+ or any of the other streaming services or websites that Disney owns. Disney+ only streams content that the company owns, and the Shrek franchise is not one of those.
Is Shrek on Hulu?

Hulu is one of the largest streaming services in the entire world, as it is third behind Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in that regard. And while Disney does have a large share over Hulu, the good news is that Hulu can stream a lot of different movies and shows that come from different studios and companies as long as Hulu has the licensing right to stream them. So, is Shrek on Hulu?
Yes, Shrek is on Hulu even though Disney has a large stake over Hulu and its parent company, 20th Century Fox. Here are the Shrek movies that are available on Hulu:
- Shrek (2001)
The movie that started it all is Shrek, which was released in 2001. When Shrek was released, no one ever thought that this movie was going to eventually become a franchise. However, because of the massive success of Shrek, it was able to become one of the most popular movies of the 2000s.
Shrek is actually DreamWorks Animation’s fifth film. The story follows Shrek, a reclusive ogre that lives isolated in a swamp and has no friends that could keep him company. For the longest time, Shrek was contented with his life, but he soon found himself in the middle of a dangerous rescue mission to save a princess-turned-ogre, who the evil Lord Farquaad was planning to get married to against her will. And his only companion that time was a talking donkey named, you guessed it, Donkey.
The first movie is available on Hulu, and that means that you can catch the film that is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated films of all time. It even won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature and was the inaugural winner of that award. Sign up to Hulu if you want to catch an instant classic.
- Shrek 2 (2004)
The massive success of the first Shrek film prompted a sequel, which is entitled Shrek 2. And yes, this movie is available on Hulu. That means that subscribing to Hulu will allow you to watch two of the greatest animated films of all time.
Following the conclusion of the first film, Shrek 2’s plot revolves around Shrek and Princess Fiona as they are trying to introduce the ogre to the princess’s family, which was not too keen on their daughter having a relationship with an ogre living in a swamp.
In the middle of all that, the evil Fairy Godmother schemes to put her son Prince Charming on the throne by getting rid of Shrek and having the handsome young man marry the ogre princess.
Along the way, the duo of Shrek and Donkey met the Zorro-like Puss in Boots (interestingly voiced by Antonio Banderas himself), who became one of the most popular characters of the franchise and went on to help Shrek and Donkey save the day.
Of course, Shrek 2 earned as much praise as the first film and even earned nearly double than what the original Shrek earned at the box office. That means that there is no doubting how big of a success Shrek 2 is, as the film went on to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time at that time.
Is Shrek on Netflix?

While Hulu may have two amazing Shrek films that are the two most successful films in the entire Shrek franchise, it is worthy to note that Netflix is the best place to catch Shrek because it has all of the Shrek films. Yes, all of them, and that includes the first two Shrek films, the third and fourth films, and the spin-offs.
- Shrek the Third (2007)
Shrek the Third starts off from where the second film follows as he was poised to become the new ruler of Far Far Away. However, because he loved the simple life with his family in the swamp and because he believed that he was not fit to rule the kingdom, things were set into motion. Of course, it was Prince Charming that hatched a plan to try to overthrow the kingdom.
Even though Shrek the Third isn’t as popular as the first two films, it still managed to earn a lot of money by going for more than $800 million at the box office. However, Shrek was not going to end as a trilogy.
- Shrek Forever After (2010)
After the events of Shrek the Third, Shrek is now a father with Princess Fiona, who he now lives with in their simple home in a swamp. However, Shrek was becoming tired of his life and celebrity status. He wished to go back to his old life as a true ogre, which set a reality-bending story that changed the course of history.
Even though Shrek Forever After didn’t have the same magic that the first three films had, its popularity sold itself. Shrek Forever After earned more than $700 million at the box office. As of this writing, it is the final movie of the Shrek film franchise. However, there are rumors going around that there is going to be a fifth Shrek film.
- Puss in Boots (2011)
The first spin-off movie of the entire Shrek franchise is Puss in Boots, which features the charismatic and popular Puss, who is one of the most beloved characters of the entire Shrek franchise.
The film takes place between Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, as Puss is on a quest to retrieve magic beans that will allow him to climb a beanstalk to reach the goose that lays a golden egg. Of course, he also meets several characters along the way.
- Shrek the Halls
Shrek the Halls is a spin-off television special made for Christmas. This 30-minute show was released in 2007, just right after the third movie. The movie follows Shrek’s quest to find what Christmas is all about because this was basically the first time he was going to celebrate Christmas in his entire life.
- Shrek’s Swamp Stories
Shrek’s Swamp Stories is a three-episode spin-off series from the main Shrek timeline. It basically follows different storylines that are all based on the different characters of the Shrek franchise.
The first episode is Scared Shrekless, which is a Halloween-themed Shrek adventure story. This episode is also featured in DreamWorks’ Spooky Stories. Meanwhile, the second is Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos, which is a spin-off story featuring Puss and three kittens that he placed under his wing. And the third episode is a nine-minute story that features some of the Shrek characters joining a singing contest called Far Far Away Idol.
